Frequently Asked Questions

What is a midwife?

A midwife is a health professional who cares for families around childbirth. The education and training for a midwife is similar to that of a nurse. Brealin is a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM), a knowledgeable, skilled and professional independent midwifery practitioner who has met the standards for certification set by the North American Registry of Midwives (NARM) and is qualified to provide the Midwives Model of Care.

What is a water birth?

Water birth is the process of giving birth in a tub of warm water. Some people decide to stay in the water for the birth after laboring in water. The theory behind water birth is that since the baby has already been in the amniotic fluid sac for nine months, birthing in a similar environment is gentler for the baby and less stressful for the birther.

What happens in case of an emergency?

If you are in labor at home and something seems to be wrong with you or your baby, you may need to be transferred to hospital. Your midwife is trained to identify potential risks before emergencies arise, so transfer to a hospital can take place in a calm, safe manner.

Is home birth safe?

In a recent large study, they found that giving birth at home is as safe as a hospital for low risk families having their second or subsequent birth. There is also a lower chance of having an assisted delivery, which could be a caesarean section, instrumental delivery or episiotomy for first and second time mothers. High risk pregnancies or pregnancies with known complications for the pregnant person or child are not recommended for home birth.
